Morrisons has joined a list of UK supermarkets to commit to removing 5p single-use plastic carrier bags from all of its stores.

The supermarket has said that it will proceed with a phase out of within a few weeks, and that all single-use plastic bags will be removed  “within a few months”.

The announcement follows increasing media attention on the problem of plastic pollution, with pressure growing for supermarkets and other businesses to act.

Campaigners have responded to by suggesting that eliminating single-use bags is not enough, and that supermarkets need to work on becoming plastic free. This could begin with first developing a ‘plastic-free aisle’.

Currently, Morrisons has an ethical index ranking of 64, putting it under the likes of Lidl, Co-op and Sainsbury’s.
