Asda has joined a wave of other supermarkets in committing to cut plastic waste. The pledge follows a “series of measures”, including plans to scrap 5p carrier bags in all stores. The supermarket will also ditch the use of plastic straws in its cafes. By the end of 2019, Asda has also committed to introducing reusable drinks cups in its cafes.

While these plans represent some steps in the right direction, many campaigners have responded by suggesting the measures are not enough. The argument is that more needs to be done about cutting plastic waste across the whole operation, such as with Iceland’s recent commitment to eliminate plastic packaging from all of its own brand products.

Currently Asda ranks among the least ethical supermarkets in the UK. You can review the brand’s ethical ranking here.
